About Us | The Adventures of Max and Whitey

Maxine White

Max (Maxine White)

I grew up in a large, close-knit Catholic family in the land locked state of Utah.  There were lots of outdoor activities of camping and exploring the mountains but only a limited amount of water sports were available to me.  After graduating with a business degree from Westminster College in Salt Lake City, a girl friend and I made an impulsive decision to move to San Francisco.  We had no jobs, very little money saved and knew only a handful of people there but, at the age of 25, that’s how you do things.

Three years later I met this crazy Australian at a party.  My first date with Whitey was my first time sailing.  Soon I was giving up my job in the financial district for a sailing adventure-filled life with him.

Our travels have taken us down the Pacific Coast of California, Mexico and Central America, then transiting the Panama Canal and throughout the Caribbean.  We also took a 76 foot catamaran across the Atlantic from the BVI’s to Portugal.

When we landed in the British Virgin Islands for our wedding in February 1992, we had to stop. Landing jobs with ‘The Moorings’ as Captain and Chef on a charter boat set us on a career path of boats that we hadn’t even envisioned.   Along with this new lifestyle, my skills and passion for cooking have evolved to a level that has earned me major awards at International Boat Shows.

In addition to sailing we are passionate about scuba diving, exploring other cultures and continuing to learn while always keeping the adventure alive.

John White

Whitey (John White)

I am from Perth in Western Australia and grew up at one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Scarborough Beach.   My younger years were filled with surfing and hanging out at the beach.  My brother and I were raised by our amazing mother who was on her own until she married the love of her life when I was 14 and we became part of a larger family.

After completing an electrical apprenticeship, I motor biked around Australia working and exploring every state for 6 years. I left Australia and went overseas to explore New Zealand and the South Pacific on my way to San Francisco. I worked there for 6 months and continued my adventurous ways to explore Mexico, Central and South America. I spent a wonderful year in Costa Rica where I worked and went to language school to learn Spanish.  To pay for my classes, I built the school some rooms.  Speaking another language is something that I never thought I would do but it has changed my life and opened doors everywhere I go.  The following year I traveled throughout South America and capped this off with a 63-day canoe trip down the Amazon River and it’s tributaries.

Returning to San Francisco in 1980 I started a business installing and monitoring Fire and Burglar Alarms Systems. All my spare time was taken up sailboat racing on the challenging waters of San Francisco Bay and out in the Pacific Ocean. After 9 years there, I was in the process of selling my business and sailing out the Golden Gate Bridge when I met the love of my life Max (Maxine).  I quickly taught her to sail and convinced her to throw in her office job to join me.  The next 26 years have been a wonderful adventure together. Working and living 24/7 together, we have shared every moment, some tragic but especially full of laughter and love.
